I was trying to design a good treehouse, and I thought I was being pretty clever until I discovered these guys, The Treehouse Workshop Inc. However, that didn't discourage me, and I've now started building prototypes.
Here is the prototype in the early stages of construction. Note the tightened lashings, one of the techniques borrowed from skin-on-frame boat construction.
